After Repairs Test Drive

AFTER REPAIRS TEST DRIVE

PURPOSE
Incorrect belt tensioning (squeak/squeal) and incorrect timing belt alignment are the most common problems encountered after a timing belt replacement. The after repairs test drive helps verify that the job was done properly.

WHAT TO CHECK
- Listen for any abnormal noises which may be coming from the timing belt or drive belts.

NOTE: Timing belt noises due to incorrect tension will generally be loudest during deceleration.

- Cycle on all accessories and listen for drive belt noises.
- Accelerate and decelerate the vehicle and compare the performance to the initial test drive or to "normal" performance if the timing belt was broken.

NOTE:
- A timing belt which is installed only one tooth out of alignment may severely affect the vehicles performance.
- If the belt is off one tooth it will often require rotating the distributor the entire length of its adjustment to achieve the correct ignition timing.

- Listen for noises from the timing cover. Interference with the timing belt or accessory belts may indicate belts improperly installed, or timing cover improperly installed.
