Rear Window Defogger System does not Operate [08/2013 - ]: Procedure

  1. CHECK FOR DTC 
    • *1: w/o Multi-display
    • *2: w/ Multi-display
    1. Check if the LIN communication system*1 or CAN communication system*2 is functioning normally.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      DTC is not output A
      LIN DTC is output*1 B
      CAN DTC is output*2 C

    A: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (DEFOGGER RELAY) 
    1. Select the Active Test using the Techstream to generate a control command, and then check that the rear window defogger operates.

      On Techstream screen, item changes between ON and OFF according to above chart.

  3. REPLACE AIR CONDITIONING CONTROL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily replace the air conditioning control assembly with a new or normally functioning one. Refer to REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK WINDOW DEFOGGER SYSTEM 
    1. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    2. Check that pressing the defogger switch illuminates the indicator and warms the rear window surface.
    3. Check that after approximately 15 minutes, the indicator light turns off and the rear window defogger deactivates.

      OK

      Rear window defogger system functioning normally.

    NG → See step   14 

    OK → END (AIR CONDITIONING CONTROL ASSEMBLY IS DEFECTIVE) 

  5. CHECK NAVIGATION SYSTEM 
    1. Check if the navigation system function properly. Refer to HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING [08/2013 - ] .

      OK

      Navigation system function properly.

    NG → See step   18 

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. REPLACE AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily replace the air conditioning amplifier assembly with a new or normally functioning one. Refer to REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  7. CHECK WINDOW DEFOGGER SYSTEM 
    1. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    2. Check that pressing the defogger switch illuminates the indicator and warms the rear window surface.
    3. Check that after approximately 15 minutes, the indicator light turns off and the rear window defogger deactivates.

      OK

      Rear window defogger system functioning normally.

  8. REPLACE MULTI-MEDIA MODULE RECEIVER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily replace the multi-media module receiver assembly with a new or normally functioning one. Refer to REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  9. CHECK WINDOW DEFOGGER SYSTEM 
    1. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    2. Check that pressing the defogger switch illuminates the indicator and warms the rear window surface.
    3. Check that after approximately 15 minutes, the indicator light turns off and the rear window defogger deactivates.

      OK

      Rear window defogger system functioning normally.

    NG → See step   19 

    OK → END (MULTI-MEDIA MODULE RECEIVER ASSEMBLY IS DEFECTIVE) 

  10. INSPECT DEFOGGER RELAY (DEFOG)

    1. Remove the defogger relay from the engine room junction block.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3 - 4 Battery voltage is not applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 Ω
      3 - 5 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 4 Battery voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 2 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 5 Below 1 Ω

    NG → REPLACE DEFOGGER RELAY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (DEFOGGER RELAY - BATTERY AND AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY)

    1. Remove the defogger relay from the engine room relay block.
    2. Disconnect the E36 air conditioning amplifier assembly connector.
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Defogger relay terminal 1 - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 11 to 14 V
      Defogger relay terminal 5 - Body ground Always 11 to 14 V
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Defogger relay terminal 2 - E36-24 (RDEF) Always Below 1 Ω
      Defogger relay terminal 2 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  12. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER - DEFOGGER RELAY AND BODY GROUND)

    1. Disconnect the S19 and S20 defogger wire connectors.
    2. Remove the defogger relay from the engine room relay block.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      S19-1 (B) - Defogger relay terminal 3 Always Below 1 Ω
      S20-1 (E) - Body ground
      Defogger relay terminal 4 - Body ground
      S19-1 (B) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  13. CHECK REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER WIRE

    1. Disconnect the S19 and S20 defogger wire connectors.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      S19-1 (B) - S20-1 (E) Engine switch on (IG) and defogger switch on 11 to 14 V

    NG → See step   14 

    OK → See step   15 

  14. REPLACE AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] 
  15. REPLACE BACK WINDOW GLASS. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] 
  16. GO TO LIN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [08/2013 - ] 
  17. GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [08/2013 - ] 
  18. GO TO NAVIGATION SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING [08/2013 - ] 
  19. REPLACE MULTI-DISPLAY ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ]
