Abnormal Noise from A/C Compressor

SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS CHART

Condition Possible Cause Action
During A/C compressor operation, a rumbling noise is heard proportional to engine revolutions  Inadequate clearance in scroll area Replace A/C compressor  .
A loud noise is heard at a certain rpm, disproportionately to engine revolution  Loose or faulty accessory (A/C compressor) drive belt Replace drive belt and/or belt tensioner if necessary  .
Loose A/C compressor mounting bolts Retighten mounting bolts  .
A loud rattle is heard at low engine rpm  Loose A/C compressor armature plate bolt Retighten armature plate bolt. Replace A/C compressor if it was operated in this condition for a long time  .
