Steering Wheel: Service and Repair




Steering Wheel Removal and Installation

Steering Wheel and Column Construction

NOTE:

The impact energy absorbing function of the steering column may be impaired if the steering column receives an excessively large force.

Be careful not to strongly impact the steering column when removing and installing it.

Removal

1) Remove driver air bag (inflator) module from steering wheel referring to Removal and Installation Driver Air Bag (Inflator) Module Removal and Installation:Advanced Air Bag or Removal and Installation Driver Air Bag (Inflator) Module Removal and Installation:Except Advanced Air Bag.
2) Disconnect horn connector and audio control switch connector, if equipped.
3) Remove steering shaft nut.
4) Make alignment marks (1) on steering wheel and shaft for a guide during reinstallation.






5) Remove steering wheel (1) with special tool.

NOTE:
Hammering the end of the steering shaft will impair the collapsible steering column structure.

Do not hammer the end of the steering shaft.

(A): 09944-36011





Installation

NOTE:

If the operations in Steps 1) and 2) are omitted or not performed as instructed, the contact coil will break when the steering wheel is turned.

Be sure to perform following Steps 1) and 2) exactly as instructed.

1) Check that vehicle's front tires are at straight-ahead position and contact coil cable assembly is centered. Refer to Procedures Centering Contact Coil Cable Assembly.
2) Install steering wheel (1) to steering shaft with 2 lugs (2) on contact coil cable assembly fitted in two grooves (3) in the back of steering wheel and also aligning marks (4) on steering wheel and steering shaft.
3) Tighten steering shaft nut to specified torque.

Tightening torque
Steering shaft nut 33 Nm (3.3 kgf-m, 24.0 lbf-ft)





4) Connect horn connector and audio control switch connector, if necessary.
5) Install driver air bag (inflator) module to steering wheel. Refer to Removal and Installation Driver Air Bag (Inflator) Module Removal and Installation:Advanced Air Bag or Removal and Installation Driver Air Bag (Inflator) Module Removal and Installation:Except Advanced Air Bag.
