CONDITION

The fuel filler cap and tether have become detached from the body.

CAUSE

Anchor rivet will not hold the fuel cap tether.

CORRECTION

Re-install the fuel cap with the new tether and anchor rivet listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin. DO NOT replace the Fuel Cap for this incident, should it occur.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Using a "trim panel tool" or other suitable tool, remove the tether anchor rivet from the body if it is still mounted.

  2. Remove the fuel filler cap from the vehicle.
  3. Use a flat blade screwdriver to un-snap the retaining ring from the fuel cap. Un-snap at 4-5 spots around the ring.

  4. Remove the retaining ring and tether from the fuel cap.

  5. Install the new tether onto the fuel cap with the offset positioned as shown in the illustration.
  6. Snap the gray retaining ring back into place, making sure that it is fully seated onto the fuel cap.

  7. Re-install the fuel filler cap onto the vehicle.
  8. Attach the small end of the tether to the body with the new tether anchor rivet.
NOTE: Make sure that the tether is not twisted before it is attached to the body.
With the fuel filler cap installed, allow the tether to swing freely to insure that it is not twisted, push the tether anchor rivet through the small hole at the end of the tether, then push the rivet into the body using your thumb.
