Engine Oil and Filter Change

WARNING:
  • New and used engine oil can be hazardous.

Be sure to read GENERAL PRECAUTIONS and observe what in written there.

  • Steps 1) - 11) must be performed with ENGINE NOT RUNNING. For Step 12), be sure to have adequate ventilation while engine is running.
  • To avoid getting burned, replace oil filter when the exhaust system is cool.

Before draining engine oil, check engine for oil leakage. If any sign of leakage is found, make sure to correct defective part before proceeding to the following procedure.

  1. Remove right side engine under cover.
  2. Drain engine oil by removing drain plug (1).
  3. Wipe drain plug and its mounting surface clean. Reinstall drain plug with new gasket and tighten it to specified torque.

    Tightening torque

    Engine oil drain plug (a): 35 N.m (3.6 kg-m, 26.0 lbf-ft)

  5. Wipe oil filter mounting surface of cylinder block cleanly.
  6. Apply engine oil to new oil filter O-ring.

  7. Screw new filter on oil filter stand by hand until filter O-ring touches filter mounting surface.
CAUTION: To tighten oil filter properly, it is important to accurately identify the position at which filter O-ring first contacts the mounting surface.
  8. Tighten oil filter (1) 3/4 turn from the point of contact with filter mounting surface using special tool.

  9. Replenish oil up to FULL level mark on oil level gauge (oil pan and oil filter capacity). The filler inlet is at top of cylinder head cover.

Use only engine oil of American Petroleum Institute (API) Certified for Gasoline Engines "starburst" symbol.

It is highly recommended to use SAE 5W-30 oil.

NOTE: Engine oil capacity is specified below. However, note that the amount of oil required when actually changing oil may somewhat differ from the data depending on various conditions (temperature, viscosity, etc.)

    Engine oil specifications

Oil pan capacity: About 4.3 liters (9.09 US pt./7.57 Imp pt.)

Oil filter capacity: About 0.2 liters (0.42 US pt./0.35 Imp pt.)

Others: About 0.5 liters (1.06 US pt./0.88 Imp pt.)

Total: About 5.0 liters (10.57 US pt./8.80 Imp pt.)

  10. Check oil filter and drain plug for oil leakage.
  11. Install right side engine under cover.
  12. Start engine and run it for 3 min. Stop it and wait 5 min before checking oil level. If necessary, add oil up to FULL level mark (hole) (1) on oil level gauge.
