CVT CONTROLLER REPROGRAMMING FOR DTC P0705, P0842, AND P0841
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
| SUZUKI: | 2010 SX4 (RW420 - CVT) |
| SECTION: | Transmission/Transaxle |
CONDITION
When starting the vehicle under certain conditions, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) will illuminate and all three Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) (DTC) P0705, P0842, and P0841 may be stored together in the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
The conditions under which DTCs are stored include:
- When starting the vehicle, if the ignition is turned OFF when the engine RPM is below 450rpm.
- When starting the vehicle, if the engine rpm is detected to go above 450rpm then drop below 450 rpm within a period of 30ms.
CAUSE
The TCM has been programmed with deficient TCM control software and as a result, the TCM may detect perceived abnormalities with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) operation under the listed conditions.
CORRECTION
DO NOT replace the TCM or CVT! Please reprogram (reflash) the TCM with updated software that has been improved to correct the CVT controller anomaly. The SEPS database files installed on the PC or laptop being used for reprogramming must be version 2.012.0914 or later. The current database version can be accessed and downloaded on www.SuzukiPitstopPlus.com.
- Left click on the SEPS Software Program ICON in the upper left corner.
- Left click "About Suzuki Pass-Thru Programming Software..."
- Confirm that the database calibration version is 2.012.0914 or later. If an earlier version is identified, please update your SEPS software before proceeding.
REQUIRED TOOLS
- PC or Laptop with the Suzuki ECU Programming System (SEPS) software installed and running version 2.012.0914 or later. The current database version can be accessed and downloaded from www.SuzukiPitstopPlus.com.
- J2534 compliant pass-thru device
- Suzuki Diagnostic System (SDS) Tool Kit.

SERVICE ACTION
- Connect the SDT to the vehicle's Data Link Connector (DLC) and check all controllers for DTCs. Make a note of those that require further attention aside from this bulletin to correct those malfunctions after the TCM reprogramming is completed.NOTE: Refer to the DTC table "POTENTIAL DTCs BY TCM REPROGRAMMING" included in this bulletin to identify DTCs that can be stored during this reprogramming procedure even though there is no trouble. These DTCs do not require additional attention.
- Clear the DTCs using the SDT.
- Connect the SDT to the USB port of your PC or Laptop being used for SEPS reprogramming.NOTE: If using the SDS as the pass-thru device, disconnect and set aside the SDT. Then connect the SDS into the DLC of the vehicle being reprogrammed and into the USB port of your PC or Laptop being used for SEPS reprogramming.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON (Run) position leaving the engine OFF.
- Start the SEPS software from your PCs "Programs" menu:
- Select "Start" on your PCs toolbar
- Select "Programs"
- Select "Suzuki ECU Programming System"
- Select "Suzuki Pass-Thru Programming Software"
- Follow the prompts to select the desired system controller to reprogram (TCM) and the pass-thru device being used ("Suzuki SDT" for SDT or "Pass-Thru PDIB32" for SDS).
- Once communication has been established between the PC and the vehicle controller, confirm that the proposed system update information matches that listed in the table "TCM MODEL LIST". If all the data matches the update requirements continue forward through the software program prompts until the process is complete.TCM MODEL INFORMATION
TCM MODEL LIST Model Specification Early TCM Programming without countermeasure (2010) Latest TCM Programming with countermeasure; CVT Control Data (2011~) Part Number Version Part Number Version RW420 2WD 38880-54LG0~G2 0000, 0001 0002, 0003 38880-54LG3 0004 4WD 38880-54LH0~H2 0000, 0001 0002, 0003 38880-54LH3 0004 - If the SDS was used as the pass-thru device, disconnect the SDS from the vehicle and the USB port of your PC or Laptop and connect the SDT to the vehicle's DLC.
- Using the SDT, check for any DTCs which may have been set related to the reprogramming process (See "POTENTIAL DTCs BY TCM REPROGRAMMING ") for codes that a technician can expect to find. It is normal to find these codes stored after the reprogramming procedure, and do not require additional attention. Use the SDT to clear any DTCs that may have been stored due to reprogramming of the TCM.
- Troubleshoot any DTC(s) that were previously noted as not related to this bulletin.
- Road test the vehicle to confirm the CVT is operating properly.
- The reprogram procedure is complete.POTENTIAL DTCs BY TCM REPROGRAMMING
This table lists DTCs that are commonly stored during routine TCM reprogramming. They are not indications of a system failure if set as a result of reprogramming. Refer to the service manual to diagnose codes other than these. Model DTC Remark RW420 B1505L Passenger Side Sunlight Sensor and/or Its Circuit Malfunction To prevent the battery from over discharging during shipment of new vehicles, it may be left as a past code. It will remain as a past code even after the TCM has been reprogrammed. C1024 Steering Angle Sensor Circuit Failure C1038 Steering Angle Sensor Detect Rolling Counter Failure C1122 Engine Speed Signal Malfunction Each time the ignition is switched to ON, the DTC will set. After the engine is started, it will disappear. B1504L Driver Side Sunlight Sensor and/or Its Circuit Malfunction If DTC was set when vehicle was inside, or outside without sunshine, failure mode may be shown.
