Removal Procedure

    Fig 1: Identifying Cover Screws

  1. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  2. Remove the engine cover bolts.
  3. Remove the engine cover.

  5. Disconnect the breather tube form the valve cover.
  6. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the valve cover.

  8. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor connector.

  10. Disconnect the ignition wires from the spark plugs.

  12. Remove the valve cover bolts.
  13. Remove the valve cover and gasket.
  14. IMPORTANT: Use extreme care when removing the camshaft not to nick, scratch, or damage the camshaft lobes or bearing surfaces.
  15. While holding the intake camshaft firmly in place, remove the intake camshaft gear bolt.
  16. Remove the intake camshaft gear.
  17. While holding the exhaust camshaft firmly in place, remove the exhaust camshaft gear bolt.
  18. Remove the exhaust camshaft gear.

  20. Remove the camshaft cap bolts gradually and in the sequence shown for each camshaft cap.

  22. Remove the intake camshaft caps. Maintain the correct positions for installation.
  23. Remove the intake camshaft.
  24. Remove the exhaust camshaft caps. Maintain the correct positions for installation.
  25. Remove the exhaust camshaft.
