EXTENDED CRANKING TIME
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
| SUZUKI: | 2007-2008 SX4 (RW420) |
| SECTION: | Engine |
CONDITION
When re-starting an engine after it has been shut off for several hours, some extended cranking time might be necessary to start the engine. All diagnostic symptom procedures have been followed without success.
CAUSE
When shut off, the engine may randomly stop rotating at a position with the intake valve and exhaust valve open in any given cylinder. This may allow exhaust gas to enter the intake system. This will cause extended cranking until the exhaust gas is cleared from the intake.
CORRECTION
Reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM) with the latest Suzuki ECU Programming System (SEPS) software. This software update will stop the engine rotation in a position which reduces or eliminates the possibility of the intake and exhaust valve being open at the same time in any given cylinder.
Refer to the General TSB 05 XXXXX "ECM (ECU) Reprogramming Verification Procedure Using the Suzuki SDS Tool" . If the vehicle does not have the latest version follow the reprogramming procedure described below.

Reprogramming Procedure
- Access the Suzuki Pitstop.
- Download and review the Suzuki ECU Programming System Operator's Manual. This must be read and understood COMPLETELY before attempting to reprogram the ECM.
- Following the procedure outlined in the Suzuki ECU Programming System Operator's Manual, download and install the SEPS Software "SOFTWARE.EXE", (if it is not already installed).
- Follow the procedure in Section 3.2 of the Operator's Manual to update the Database files. Download and unzip SEPS Data Base "DATABASE.EXE" onto your PC. This step is only required to be done once to accommodate all vehicles covered under this TSB.NOTE: This Database "DATABASE.EXE" has been updated with newer data for reprogramming without changing the file name. You are requested to download in order to update the database in your PC.
- Following the procedures outlined in the Suzuki ECU Programming System Operator's Manual, hook up the SDS Interface Tool P/N 09910-06520 or 09910-06521 to the vehicle and run the ECM reprogramming software. If the message "[4028] ECU already has the latest version" appears, click "OK" and continue to step 6. The glove box label should already be in the glove box.
NOTE: You may see the message below when programming. If so follow the instructions then restart the programming procedure.
- Fill out the Reprogram Label P/N 99963-01501-224 (the part number and version will be displayed at the "The reprogramming is successful" screen). Then affix the label to the back of the glove box door as pictured below.NOTE: If the symptom remains after reflashing, contact the S.M.A.R.T. Hotline for assistance.
