MIL Does Not Light at Ignition Switch ON and Engine Does Not Start Through It Is Cranked Up: Troubleshooting

IGNITION SWITCH - TROUBLESHOOTING CHART

Step Action YES NO
Ignition fuse check
  1. Remove ECM cover.
  2. Check for proper connection at terminals "E61-7", "C51-3-20", "E61-9", "C51-3-15", "C51-3-4", "C51-2-7", "C51-3-17" and "C51-3-6" of ECM connector.
  3. If OK, turn OFF ignition switch.
  4. Check for fuse blow at "IG COIL" fuse.

Is "IG COIL" fuse OK?
Go to Step 2. Fuse blows.
Ignition fuse check
  1. Turn ON ignition switch.
  2. Measure ignition switch signal voltage between "C51-3-20" terminal of ECM connector and vehicle body ground.

Is terminal voltage 10 - 14 V?
Go to Step 3. Open in "BLK/WHT" circuit.
Main relay circuit check
  1. Turn OFF ignition switch.
  2. Check for fuse blow at main fuse.
  3. If OK, measure main relay voltage between "E61-9" terminal of ECM connector and vehicle body ground with ignition switch turned OFF.

Is terminal voltage 10 - 14 V?
Go to Step 4. Go to Step 7.
Main relay circuit check
  1. Turn ON ignition switch.
  2. Measure main relay voltage between "E61- 9" terminal of ECM connector and vehicle body ground.

Is terminal voltage 0 - 1 V?
Go to Step 6. Go to Step 5.
ECM ground check
  1. Turn OFF ignition switch.
  2. Measure resistance between each "C51-2- 7", "C51-3-17" and "C51-3-6" terminal of ECM connector and vehicle body ground.

Is resistance less than 5 Ω?
Faulty ECM. ECM ground is open circuit or high resistance circuit.
Main relay circuit check
  1. Turn ON ignition switch.
  2. Measure main relay voltage between each "C51-3-15", "C51-3-4" terminal of ECM connector and vehicle body ground.

Is terminal voltage 10 - 14 V?
Faulty ECM. Go to Step 7.
Main relay circuit check
  1. Turn OFF ignition switch.
  2. Measure "BLK/RED" wire terminals voltage at main relay connector.

Is terminal voltage 10 - 14 V?
Go to Step 8. Open in "BLK/RED" circuit.
Main relay check
  1. Turn OFF ignition switch.
  2. Remove main relay and then check main relay referring to MAIN RELAY INSPECTION .

Is main relay in good condition?
"BLU" ("E61-9") or "BLU/BLK" ("C51-3-15", "C51-3-4") wire is open circuit. Faulty main relay.
