DTC P0650: Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit: Troubleshooting

TROUBLESHOOTING CHART

1 Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check? - Go to Step 2 Go to On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) System Check

  1. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the instrument panel cluster.

Is the MIL illuminated?
0 Ω Go to Step 3 Go to Step 5
3 Command the MIL OFF with a scan tool.
Is the MIL illuminated?
- Go to Step 4 Go to Diagnostic Aids

  1. Test the MIL control circuit for a short to ground or short to voltage.
  2. If a condition is found, repair as necessary.

Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 16 Go to Step 13

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the Engine Control Module (ECM) connector.
  3. Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the MIL control circuit and the ECM housing.
  4. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.

Is the MIL illuminated?
- Go to Step 7 Go to Step 6
6 Does the fuse in the jumper wire open? - Go to Step 7 Go to Step 8

  1. Test the MIL control circuit for a short to voltage.
  2. If a condition is found, repair as necessary.

Are any DTCs displayed that have not been diagnosed?
- Go to Step 16 Go to Step 13

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Connect the ECM connector.
  3. Disconnect the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) connector.
  4. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  5. Probe the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the IPC harness connector with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?
- Go to Step 10 Go to Step 9
9 Repair the open in the IPC ignition 1 voltage circuit.
Did you complete the repair?
- Go to Step 16 -

  1. Connect a test lamp between the ignition 1 voltage circuit and the MIL control circuit of the IPC harness connector.
  2. Command the MIL ON and OFF with a scan tool.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF?
- Go to Step 11 Go to Step 12
11 Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the IPC harness connector.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 16 Go to Step 15

  1. Test for an open MIL control circuit.
  2. If a condition is found, repair as necessary.

Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 16 Go to Step 13
13 Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the ECM.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 16 Go to Step 14
14 Replace the ECM.
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 16 -
15 Replace the IPC.
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 16 -

  1. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool.
  2. Turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Setting the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records.

Did the DTC fail this ignition?
- Go to Step 2 Go to Step 17
17 Check if any additional DTCs are set.
Are any DTCs displayed that have not been diagnosed?
- Go to applicable DTC table System OK
