Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
- 3. This test checks for a short to voltage in the steering wheel position sensor circuits.
- 5. This test checks for a short to battery voltage on the 5-volt reference circuit.
- 6. This test checks for a short to voltage on the steering wheel position sensor signal circuit.
- 7. This test checks for an open circuit in the reference low circuit.
- 8. This test checks for a poor connection at the SSPS control module.

Step Action Value(s) Yes No 1 Did you perform the Variable Effort Steering Diagnostic System Check? - Go to Step 2 Go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK-VARIABLE EFFORT STEERING 2 - Disconnect the steering wheel position sensor.
- Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
- Measure the voltage between the 5-volt reference circuit and the low reference circuit to the steering wheel position sensor.
Is the measured resistance within the specified value?4.8-5.2 V Go to Step 3 Go to Step 4 3 - Turn OFF the ignition.
- Connect the steering wheel position sensor.
- Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
- Measure the voltage between the 5-volt reference circuit and the low reference circuit to the steering wheel position sensor.
