Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 3. This test checks for a short to voltage in the steering wheel position sensor circuits.
  2. 5. This test checks for a short to battery voltage on the 5-volt reference circuit.
  3. 6. This test checks for a short to voltage on the steering wheel position sensor signal circuit.
  4. 7. This test checks for an open circuit in the reference low circuit.
  5. 8. This test checks for a poor connection at the SSPS control module.
  6. 9. This test checks for a poor connection at the steering wheel position sensor.
    DIAGNOSTIC REFERENCE INTERMITTENT DTC

    1 Did you perform the Variable Effort Steering Diagnostic System Check? - Go to Step 2 Go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK-VARIABLE EFFORT STEERING

    1. Disconnect the steering wheel position sensor.
    2. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
    3. Measure the voltage between the 5-volt reference circuit and the low reference circuit to the steering wheel position sensor.

    Is the measured resistance within the specified value?
    4.8-5.2 V Go to Step 3 Go to Step 4

    1. Turn OFF the ignition.
    2. Connect the steering wheel position sensor.
    3. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
    4. Measure the voltage between the 5-volt reference circuit and the low reference circuit to the steering wheel position sensor.

    Did you find and correct the condition?
    - Go to Step 7 Go to Step 5
    4 Check for a short to battery voltage in the steering wheel position sensor 5-volt reference circuit.
    Did you find and correct the condition?
    - Go to Step 11 Go to Step 5
    5 Check for a short to battery voltage in the steering wheel position sensor signal circuit.
    Did you find and correct the condition?
    - Go to Step 11 Go to Step 6
    6 Check for an open in the steering wheel position sensor low reference circuit.
    Did you find and correct the condition?
    - Go to Step 11 Go to Step 8
    7 Check for a poor connection at the SSPS control module.
    Did you find and correct the condition?
    - Go to Step 11 Go to Step 9
    8 Check for a poor connection at the steering wheel position sensor.
    Did you find and correct the condition?
    - Go to Step 11 Go to Step 10
    9 Replace the SSPS control module.
    Is the repair complete?
    - Go to Step 11 -
    10 Replace the steering wheel position sensor.
    Is the repair complete?
    - Go to Step 11 -
    11 Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
    Did you correct the condition?
    - System OK Go to Step 2
