Front Axle Shaft: Installation
CAUTION:
- To prevent breakage of boots (wheel side and differential side), DO NOT contact them with other parts when installing axle shaft assembly.
- DO NOT pull housing of differential side joint. If housing is pulled, it may be detached from axle shaft.
Install axle shaft assembly by reversing removal procedure and noting the following.
- Clean front axle shaft oil seal (1) and then apply lithium grease "A" to oil seal and DOJ shaft. See Fig 1 .
- Check oil seal (1) for breakage or deterioration. Replace it as necessary.
- Install oil seal (2) until its end contacts stepped surface of axle shaft joint (1) by using a pipe (3) whose inner diameter is 2.992" (76 mm) or more and outer diameter is 3.150" (80 mm) or less. See Fig 2 .
- Right hand side: Push differential side joint by hand until it is position by snap ring fitted to its spline.
- Left hand side: Connect axle shaft flange bolts and nuts (1). See Fig 3 .
- Apply grease to front spindle thrust washer (2) and front spindle part of axle shaft "A".
- When installing axle shaft drive flange (3) to wheel hub, apply sealant to mating surface of axle shaft drive flange (3) "B".
- Install knuckle and wheel hub.
- Fill specified differential gear oil to differential case to specified level. See appropriate DIFFERENTIALS & DRIVE AXLES article.
- Tighten wheel nut.
