Ignition Timing Check: Diamante
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, 2003 Mitsubishi Montero, 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer, and 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Before inspection, make sure the vehicle meets the following criteria:
- Engine coolant temperature: 176-203°F (80-95°C).
- Lights and all accessories: OFF.
- Transaxle: Neutral (P range on vehicles with A/T).
- Insert a paper clip into the No. 3 terminal of the 3 pin connector.
- Connect a primary voltage detection type tachometer to the paper clip.
- Install the timing light.
- Start the engine and run at idle.
- Check that the idle speed approximately matches the speed specified in IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
- Start the engine and run it at idle.
- Select the MFI system Actuator Test from the scan tool menu and scroll to item 17 - Basic Ignition Timing.
- Press the "Y" key and check that the basic ignition timing is the standard value. See IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS table.
- If the ignition timing value is not within the standard value range, check the crankshaft position sensor. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR under IGNITION CHECKS.
- Check that the idling ignition timing is at the correct value. See IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS table.NOTE: Ignition timing is variable within about plus or minus 8°, even under normal operating conditions, and it is automatically further advanced by about 5° from 10° BTDC at higher altitudes.
