Disassembly Procedure

    Fig 1: Rack/Pinion Steering Assembly

  1. -

    Remove the rack and pinion steering assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement .

  2. Remove the dust cover from the lower end of the housing.
  3. NOTE: If the stub shaft is not securely held, damage to the pinion teeth could result.
  4. While holding the stub shaft with a wrench, remove the locknut from the pinion.

  6. With the gear centered, mark the location of the stub shaft notch on the housing to aid in properly installing the pinion and valve assembly.
  7. Remove the upper housing retaining ring.

    NOTE: Use extreme care when installing the valve and pinion assembly from the steering gear housing, otherwise the valve and pinion assembly, bearing, steering gear housing,or seal could be damaged.
  9. Remove the valve and pinion assembly from the stub shaft housing.

  11. Remove the stub shaft dust seal, the stub shaft bearing annulus assembly.
