Removal Procedure
- The steering column requires replacement.
- The steering and the ignition lock housing require replacement.
- Another operation requires the removal of the steering column.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and let the vehicle sit for 1 minute to deactivate the air bag.
- Remove the turn signal switch. Refer to Multifunction, Turn Signal Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
- Remove the wiper/washer switch. Refer to Wipers/Washer Switch Replacement in Wiper/Washer System.
- Remove the lower instrument trim panel by removing the screws.
- Remove the upper and the lower steering column cover panels.
- Disconnect the air bag electrical connections.
- Remove the key interlock solenoid screws and the key interlock solenoid. Do not drop the key interlock solenoid spring.
- Remove the key reminder switch screws and the key reminder switch.
- Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connection.
- Adjust the steering to the straight-ahead position.
- Remove the pinch bolt from the upper steering shaft coupling flange.
- Remove the nut holding the steering column jacket assembly rear bracket.
- Remove the nuts holding the steering column jacket assembly front bracket.
- Guide the steering column assembly out of the steering shaft flange and carefully lay down the assembly.

NOTE:
Once the steering column is removed from the vehicle, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping the column assembly on the end could collapse the steering shaft or loosen the plastic injections, which maintain column rigidity. Leaning on the column assembly could cause the jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage could impair the columns collapsible design. Do NOT hammer on the end of the shaft, because hammering could loosen the plastic injections, which maintain column rigidity.
