Off-Vehicle Deployment

Use following procedures when vehicle will remain in service:

WARNING: Accidental air bag or seat belt pretensioner deployment is possible. Personal injury may occur. Read and follow all service precautions. See AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove driver-side air bag module from vehicle. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Place driver-side air bag module in center of a cleared area. Position a fully charged 12 volt battery 33 feet (10 m) from driver-side air bag module. Cut connector from driver-side air bag module pigtail lead. Strip 0.5" (13 mm) of insulation from pigtail wires.
  2. Cut 2 deployment harness wires, each 33 feet (10 m) in length. Strip 0.5" (13 mm) of insulation from ends of wires. Short one end of deployment harness together to prevent accidental component deployment. Splice other ends to driver-side air bag module wires.
  3. Cover connections with electrical tape. Ensure driver-side air bag module cover is face up. Untwist shorted ends of wire harness. Touch ends of wires to battery terminals. Driver-side air bag module will deploy. DO NOT touch driver-side air bag module for 30 minutes after deployment to allow for cooling time.
  4. Remove passenger-side air bag module, side impact air bag modules and seat belt pretensioners. Repeat deployment procedure. Place deployed components in plastic bags, seal and dispose of like any other part.
