On-Vehicle Deployment

Vehicles to be scrapped may have undeployed air bag modules or seat belt pretensioners. Follow these procedures when scrapping a vehicle with undeployed components:

WARNING: Accidental air bag or seat belt pretensioner deployment is possible. Personal injury may occur. Read and follow all service precautions. See AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect negative, then positive battery cables. Remove battery and position at least 33 feet (10 m) from vehicle. Remove driver-side knee bolster. Cut lower clockspring connector from clockspring wire harness. Strip 0.5" (13 mm) of insulation from wires.
  2. Cut 2 deployment harness wires, each 33 feet (10 m) in length. Strip 0.5" (13 mm) of insulation from ends of wires. Twist one pair of wire ends together to prevent accidental SRS component deployment. Splice other ends of wire harness to clockspring wires. Cover connections with electrical tape.
  3. Repeat procedure for passenger-side air bag module, side impact air bag modules and seat belt pretensioners. Stretch deployment harness wires away from vehicle so that they are near battery. Untwist one pair of wire ends. Touch ends of wires to battery terminals. Selected component will deploy. Repeat procedure for remaining components. DO NOT touch components for 30 minutes after deployment to allow time for cooling.
