Axle Shafts: Removal

- Disengage caulk ("A") and remove axle shaft nut (1) and washer. See Fig 1 .
- Hoist vehicle.
- Remove wheel.
- Drain transmission oil.
- For manual transmission. See appropriate SERVICING article in TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION.
- For automatic transmission. See appropriate SERVICING article in TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION.
- Remove tie rod end split pin (1) and castle nut (2). See Fig 2 .
- Disconnect tie rod end (3) from steering knuckle (4) by using the tie-rod end remover.
- Using plastic hammer (2), drive out axle shaft joint (1) so as to release snap ring fitting of joint spline at center. See Fig 3 .
- Disconnect front suspension control arm ball stud (1) from steering knuckle (2) after removing ball stud bolt (3) and nut. See Fig 4
.NOTE: To prevent breakage of boots, be careful not to bring them into contact with other parts, when removing axle shaft assembly.
- Remove axle shaft assembly.
- Remove center shaft support bolts (3) and remove center shaft support (2) with center shaft (1) from differential side gear shaft. See Fig 5 .
