P/S Gear Box Removal and Installation: Removal

  1. Take out fluid in P/S fluid reservoir with syringe or such.
  2. After removing joint cover, loosen steering shaft upper joint bolt (1) (but it must not be removed) and remove lower joint bolt (2).
    CAUTION: Be sure to set front wheels (tires) in straight direction and remove ignition key from key cylinder before the following steps, otherwise contact coil of air bag system may get damaged.

  3. With front wheels in straight-ahead position, separate pinion and lower joint.
  4. Hoist vehicle and remove both right and left front wheels.
  5. Remove split pin (3) and then remove tie-rod castle nut (2) from steering knuckle (1).

  6. Using special tool, remove tie-rod end (2) from knuckle (1).

  7. Remove exhaust pipe No. 2.
  8. Remove engine rear mounting (1) together with its bracket (2) from engine and member, and remove engine mounting member (3).

  9. For vehicle equipped with 4WD, remove transfer referring to Transfer Dismounting and Remounting .
  10. Remove cylinder pipes (3) and (4) from steering gear box, using flare nut wrench.
    NOTE: As fluid flows out of disconnected joints, put a receptacle under joints or a plug to pipe.
  11. Disconnect high pressure pipe (1) and low pressure hose (2) from steering gear box, using flare nut wrench.
    NOTE: As fluid flows out of disconnected joints, have a container under joints or a plug to pipe.

  12. Remove steering gear box mounting bolts and then remove steering gear box from vehicle.
