Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Remove ECM cover. Check for proper connection at ECM connector terminals E61-7, C51-3-20, E61-9, C51-3-15, C51-3-4, C51-2-7, C51-3-17 and C51-3-6. See Figure. If okay, turn ignition off. Check IG COIL fuse. IG COIL fuse is located in fuse box. See Figure. Is IG COIL fuse is okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair short in IG COIL fuse circuit.
  2. Turn ignition on. Measure ignition switch signal voltage between ECM connector terminal C51-3-20 and vehicle body ground. Is terminal voltage 10-14 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open in Black/White wire. See SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
  3. Turn ignition off. Check MAIN fuse. MAIN fuse is located in main fuse box. See Figure. If okay, measure main relay voltage between ECM connector terminal E61-9 and vehicle body ground with ignition off. Is terminal voltage 10-14 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  4. Turn ON ignition switch. Measure main relay voltage between ECM connector terminal E61-9 and vehicle body ground. Is terminal voltage 0-1 volt? If yes, go to step  6. If no, go to next step.
  5. Turn OFF ignition switch. Measure resistance between each ECM connector terminals C51-2-7, C51-3-17 and C51-3-6 and vehicle body ground. Is resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace ECM. If no, ECM ground is open circuit or high resistance circuit.
  6. Turn ON ignition switch. Measure main relay voltage between each ECM connector terminal C51-3-15, C51-3-4 and vehicle body ground. Is terminal voltage 10-14 volts? If yes, replace ECM. If no, go to next step.
  7. Turn OFF ignition switch. Measure voltage at the Black/Red wire terminals at main relay connector. See Fig 1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAM article in ELECTRICAL. Is terminal voltage 10-14 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open in Black/Red wire.
  8. Turn OFF ignition switch. Remove main relay and then check main relay. See Fig 2. See RELAYS under RELAYS & SOLENOIDS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Is main relay in good condition? If yes, repair open in Blue wire (terminal E61-9) or Blue/Black wire (terminals C51-3-15 and C51-3-4). If no, replace faulty main relay.
