Diagnosis & Repair Procedure
- If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, go to A4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 35-pin harness connector E61. ECM is located under instrument panel, under glove box. See Figure. Check for poor terminal contact at ECM harness connector E61. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If terminal contact is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ECM connector E61 terminal No. 26 (Gray/Blue wire) and ground. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, repair short to ground in Gray/Blue wire. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ECM connector E61 terminal No. 26 (Gray/Blue wire) and ground. If voltage is zero volts, go to next step. If voltage is not zero volts, repair short to other circuit in Gray/Blue wire. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Reconnect ECM connectors. Disconnect connector between floor harness and main harness for fuel tank pressure and temperature sensor circuit. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ECM connector E61 terminals No. 24 (Gray/Yellow wire) and No. 26 (Gray/Blue wire). If voltage is 4-5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4-5 volts, substitute a known-good ECM, and repeat test.
- Turn ignition off. Remove fuel tank from vehicle. See FUEL TANK under FUEL SYSTEM in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for poor terminal contact at fuel tank pressure and temperature sensor harness connector. If connector is okay, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Check fuel tank pressure and temperature sensor performance. See FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING. If sensor is okay, go to next step. If problem is found, replace fuel tank pressure and temperature sensor. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Disconnect ECM connector E61. Reconnect connector between floor harness and main harness for fuel tank pressure and temperature sensor. Using a fused jumper wire, short between fuel tank pressure and temperature sensor connector terminals No. 2 (Gray/Yellow wire) and No. 4 (Gray/Blue wire). Measure resistance between ECM connector E61 terminals No. 24 (Gray/Yellow wire) and No. 26 (Gray/Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair high resistance in Gray/Yellow or Gray/Blue wire. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Perform DIAGNOSIS & REPAIR PROCEDURE under DTC P0116: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT - RANGE/PERFORMANCE PROBLEM. If ECT is okay, substitute a known-good ECM, and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST procedure. If ECT sensor performance is not okay, replace ECT sensor or repair ECT sensor wiring as necessary.
