Scrapped Vehicle

Some vehicles to be scrapped may have an undeployed air bag module or seat belt pretensioner. Follow these procedures when scrapping a vehicle with an undeployed component:

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position and remove key. Remove AIR BAG fuse from AIR BAG fuse box. See Figure. Wait 10 seconds or longer. Disconnect driver-side air bag module connector. See Figure. Remove glove box and disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector. See Figure. Remove both front pillar lower trim panels and disconnect seat belt pretensioner connectors, if equipped.
  2. Using Deployment Harness (09932-75030), short the two deployment harness leads together by fully seating one banana plug into the other. Connect deployment harness connector to driver-side or passenger-side air bag module connector or seat belt pretensioner, if equipped. Lock connector with lock lever. Route harness out of vehicle and stretch harness to its full length 33 ft. (10 m). See Fig 1.
NOTE: Air bag will deploy immediately when power source is connected. Deployment wires must remain shorted and not be connected to power source until air bag is to be deployed. Connecting deployment wires to power source should always be the final step in deployment procedure.
  3. Remove all loose objects from front seat and ensure no one is in vehicle. Completely cover windshield area and front door window openings with a drop cloth or blanket. Separate the two banana plugs on deployment harness.
  4. Connect harness to a 12-volt battery to immediately deploy driver-side, passenger-side air bag or pretensioner. Repeat procedure for other air bag or pretensioner. DO NOT touch air bag module area for 10 minutes due to heat generated during deployment. Wear gloves and safety glasses before handling a deployed air bag or pretensioner. Wash hands with soap and water afterward.
