Valve Clearance (3.2L & 3.5L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Isuzu Trooper, 2002 Isuzu Rodeo Sport, 2002 Isuzu Rodeo, 2002 Isuzu Axiom, and 2002 Honda Passport. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: 2.2L engine is equipped with hydraulic lash adjusters and DO NOT require adjustment.
  1. Listen for valve noise every 60,000 miles and adjust if necessary. Adjust valves every 120,000 miles, or after cylinder head or camshaft have been serviced. Check and adjust valves with engine cold. Remove rocker cover(s). Using crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate engine several times.
  2. Position maximum lift point of camshaft lobe opposite valve lifter. See Fig 1 . Using flat knife type gauge, measure clearance between camshaft lobe and valve lifter. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
    VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS

    Application (1) In. (mm)
    Intake .009-.013" (.23-.33 mm)
    Exhaust .010-.014" (.25-.35 mm)
    (1) Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.

  3. If adjustment is necessary, insert valve clearance adjuster (J-42689) between camshaft lobe and lifter. Push out adjusting shim with flat screwdriver. See Fig 2 .
NOTE: Apply motor oil to camshaft and lifters before adjusting valves.
  4. Measure adjusting shim with micrometer and compare with desired clearance. Install replacement shim(s) as necessary to obtain correct valve clearance.
  5. After all necessary adjustments are made, rotate engine several times and recheck valve clearances. Readjust valve clearances if necessary. Replace rocker cover gasket (if necessary) and reinstall rocker cover.
