Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

NOTE: For better performance and results of this diagnostic procedure, usage of appropriate wiring diagram is recommended. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
NOTE: Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use an ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, perform A-4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS, then go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition to LOCK position. Check fuel filler cap for proper installation, and cap gasket for deterioration. If fuel filler cap is okay, go to next step. If fuel filler cap is faulty, tighten or replace fuel filler cap. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  3. Check EVAP system vacuum hoses for proper connection, leakage, plugging or deterioration. If vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step. If vacuum hoses are faulty, repair as necessary and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  4. Check EVAP-CPV circuit. See EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE CIRCUIT under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP-CPV circuit is okay, go to next step. If EVAP-CPV circuit is faulty, go to step  12 .
  5. Check EVAP-CVV circuit. See EVAP CANISTER VENT VALVE CIRCUIT under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP-CVV circuit is okay, go to next step. If EVAP-CVV circuit is faulty, go to step  13 .
  6. Perform Fuel Tank Pressure Control (FPCV) valve component test. See FUEL TANK PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If FPCV is okay, go to next step. If FPCV is faulty, replace fuel tank pressure control valve and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  7. Check EVAP canister for damage. See EVAP CANISTER under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP canister is okay, go to next step. If EVAP canister is faulty, replace EVAP canister and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  8. Check fuel tank, purge line and EVAP system components for leakage. See EVAP SYSTEM LEAKAGE CHECK under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. For vacuum hose locations, see appropriate vacuum diagram in VACUUM DIAGRAMS article. If EVAP system components are okay, go to next step. If EVAP system leak is found, repair as necessary and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  9. Perform EVAP system smoke test. See EVAP SYSTEM SMOKE TEST under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP system is okay, go to next step. If EVAP system is faulty, replace faulty part and repeat step  3 .
  10. Perform FTP sensor component test. See FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If FTP sensor is okay, go to next step. If FTP sensor is faulty, replace FTP sensor. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  11. Check fuel level sensor and circuit referring to DTC P0461: FUEL LEVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT - RANGE/PERFORMANCE  . If diagnostic procedure results are okay, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If diagnostic procedure results are faulty, repair as necessary and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  12. Perform EVAP-CPV component test. See EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP-CPV is faulty, replace EVAP-CPV. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If EVAP-CPV is okay, check EVAP-CPV circuits for open or short in Blue/Black wire and Green/Black wire between EVAP-CPV and ECM. If short or open circuit is found, repair as necessary. If short or open circuit is not found, substitute ECM with a known good unit and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  13. Perform EVAP-CVV component test. See EVAP CANISTER VENT VALVE under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP-CVV is faulty, replace EVAP-CVV. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If EVAP-CVV is okay, check EVAP-CVV circuits for open or short in Blue/Black wire and Purple/Red wire between EVAP-CVV and ECM. If short or open circuit is found, repair as necessary. If short or open circuit is not found, substitute ECM with a known good unit and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
