Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

NOTE: For better performance and results of this diagnostic procedure, usage of appropriate wiring diagram is recommended. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
NOTE: Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use an ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, perform TEST D: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS, then go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition to LOCK position. Check fuel filler cap for proper installation, and cap gasket for deterioration. If fuel filler cap is okay, go to next step. If fuel filler cap is faulty, tighten or replace fuel filler cap. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  3. Check fuel tank, purge line and EVAP system components for leakage. SeeEVAP SYSTEM LEAKAGE CHECK under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. For vacuum hose locations, see appropriate vacuum diagram in VACUUM DIAGRAMS article. If EVAP system components are okay, go to next step. If EVAP system leak is found, repair as necessary and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  4. Perform EVAP system smoke test. See EVAP SYSTEM SMOKE TEST under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If no leak is detected with smoke test, go to next step. If leak is detected with smoke test, repair as necessary and retest EVAP system components for leakage. See EVAP SYSTEM LEAKAGE CHECK under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  5. Perform EVAP canister purge valve and circuit check. See EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE and EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE CIRCUIT under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP canister purge valve and circuit are okay, go to next step. If EVAP canister purge valve and/or circuit are faulty, repair as necessary and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  6. Perform EVAP canister vent valve and circuit check. See EVAP CANISTER VENT VALVE and EVAP CANISTER VENT VALVE CIRCUIT under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP canister vent valve and circuit are okay, go to next step. If EVAP canister vent valve and/or circuit are faulty, repair as necessary and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  7. Perform FTP sensor component test. See FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If FTP sensor is okay, go to next step. If FTP sensor is faulty, replace FTP sensor. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  8. Check fuel level sensor and circuit referring to DTC P0461: FUEL LEVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT - PERFORMANCE . If diagnostic procedure results are okay, substitute ECM with a known good unit and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If diagnostic procedure results are faulty, repair as necessary and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
