- Perform On-Board Diagnostic II System Check.
- Perform Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) System Check.
- Check ignition system and grounds.
- Check PCM and ignition grounds.
- Check for intermittent open or short to ground in Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) circuit.
- Check canister purge system for proper operation.
- Check for contaminated fuel.
- Check for restricted fuel filter.
- Check fuel pressure.
- Remove spark plugs and check for wet plugs, cracks, improper gap, burned electrodes or heavy carbon deposits. Also, check condition of distributor cap, rotor and spark plug wires.
- Check for injector leakage and connections.
- Check for intermittent EGR at idle.
- Check Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system operation.
- Check for incorrect charging system voltage.
- Check for faulty PCV operation.
- Check for faulty throttle position sensor.
- Check oxygen sensor for silicone contamination from fuel or improper RTV sealant.
- Check for faulty Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
- Check for faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
- Use scan tester to ensure vehicle speed sensor reading matches actual vehicle speed.
- Check for rich or lean conditions. Drive vehicle at speed when complaint occurs.
- Check for faulty A/C operation.
- Check for faulty Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch.
- Check Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor connections.
- Check vacuum line condition and connections.
- Check generator output voltage.
- Check for excessive use of additives in fuel.
- Check restricted exhaust system.
- Check Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) operation.
