Axle Hub Assembly: Removal

- For vehicles with ABS, remove front ABS sensor. See Fig 1 .
- For all vehicles, remove caliper assembly.
- Remove brake disc.
- Using End Yoke Holder (MB990767) to hold the hub, remove the drive shaft nut.
- Remove washer.
- Remove self-locking nut.
- Remove stabilizer rubber.
- Remove stabilizer link assembly.
- Disconnect lower arm ball joint.
- Install Ball Joint Remover (MB991897) as shown. See Fig 2 . Turn the bolt and knob as necessary to make jaws of Ball Joint Remover (MB991897) parallel. See Fig 3 . Tighten the bolt by hand and make sure that the jaws remain parallel. Tighten the bolt with a wrench to disconnect the tie rod end.
- Using Axle Shaft Puller (MB990241), Puller Body (MB991354), and End Yoke Holder (MB990767), push out the axle shaft, or the axle shaft and inner shaft assembly, from the hub and knuckle. Remove the axle shaft from the hub by pulling the bottom of the hub and knuckle outwards. Hang the axle shaft on the vehicle body with rope.
- Remove the front strut-to-hub and knuckle mounting bolts and nuts. See Fig 1 .
- Remove hub and knuckle.
NOTE:
Secure the removed caliper assembly with wire to prevent it from falling.
CAUTION:
DO NOT remove the nut from the ball joint. Loosen it and use Ball Joint Remover (MB991897) to avoid possible damage to ball joint threads. Hang Ball Joint Remover (MB991897) with cord to prevent it from falling.
NOTE:
When adjusting the ball joint remover paws to parallel, make sure the knob is as shown. See Fig 3
.
