Disc Brake Assembly: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Install front brake rotor.
- Check brake drag torque by measuring the hub torque with the pads removed.
- Remove the driveshaft. See appropriate DRIVESHAFT & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article.
- Attach Front Hub Remover and Installer (MB990998) to the front hub assembly, and tighten to 160-202 ft. lbs. (216-274 N.m). See Fig 1 .
- Use a spring scale to measure the hub torque in the forward direction. Record the hub torque.
- Install the caliper support to the knuckle.
- Install pad clips and pads to the caliper support.
- Clean and install piston using Disc Brake Piston Expander (MB990520). See Fig 2 .
- Lower the caliper assembly and install the lock pin bolt.
- Check the brake force with the pads installed.
- Start the engine and hold the brake pedal down for 5 seconds.
- Stop the engine.
- Using a spring scale, measure the hub torque with the pads installed in the forward direction.
- Calculate the drag force of the disc brake (difference between hub torque with pads installed and hub torque with pads removed). If the brake drag force exceeds 15 lbs. (68 N), disassemble and clean piston. Check for corrosion or worn piston seal, and check sliding condition of the lock pin and guide pin. Repair as necessary.
- Install new gaskets. See Figure .
- Reconnect brake hose.
- Bleed air line as necessary. See BRAKE SYSTEM under BLEEDING.
CAUTION:
Be careful that the piston boot does not become damaged when installing caliper assembly.
