Basic Idle Speed: Lancer

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, 2003 Mitsubishi Montero, 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer, and 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn ignition switch to OFF position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
NOTE: If adjustment has been changed by mistake, idle speed may become too high or idle speed may drop too low when loads A/C, defogger, etc. are placed on engine. If this occurs, adjust by following procedure.
  1. Ensure vehicle engine coolant temperature is at 176-203°F (80-95°C) with all lights, cooling fan and accessories off. Shift transmission into Neutral or Park position. Connect scan tool to OBD-II Data Link Connector (DLC) located below instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure.
  2. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, select MFI SYSTEM ACTUATOR TEST, then select item No. 30 (SAS mode or IAC motor test mode). SAS mode or IAC motor test mode sets IAC stepper motor to basic step in order to allow for basic idle speed adjustment. Check basic idle speed. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. No adjustment is necessary if engine speed is 20-100 RPM lower than indicated. This is normal for a new vehicle, one that has only been driven approximately 300 miles or less. If engine stalls or RPM is 20-100 RPM lower than indicated even though vehicle has been driven approximately 300 mile or more, check for throttle valve deposits. Clean as necessary.
  4. If idle speed is low and throttle and throttle valve is clean, turn idle speed adjusting screw until correct engine speed is obtained. See Fig 1.
  5. If idle speed to high and cannot be lowered by turning engine idle speed adjusting screw to fully closed position, determine if fixed Speed Adjusting Screw (SAS) has been moved. Fixed SAS is stop screw contacting throttle lever. See FIXED SPEED ADJUSTING SCREW . Cancel MFI SYSTEM ACTUATOR TEST. Unless MFI SYSTEM ACTUATOR TEST is canceled and ISC servo is released, MFI SYSTEM ACTUATOR TEST will continue for 27 minutes.
  6. Turn ignition off and disconnect scan tool. Start engine and let idle for 10 minutes. Ensure that basic idle speed is correct.
