AERIO, Esteem (1.8L), Grand VITARA & XL-7

  1. Warm engine up to normal operating temperature. Make sure fast idle cam and cam follower have clearance between them. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP sensor 3-pin harness connector. Using a DVOM, check resistance between specified terminals of TP sensor connector. See THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR RESISTANCE  table. See Figure . If idle switch check is not within specification, go to next step.
    THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR RESISTANCE

    Application Ohms
    Esteem
    Between Terminals No. 1 & 2 2500-6000
    Between Terminals No. 1 & 3
    At Idle 100
    At Wide Open Throttle 20,000
    Grand Vitara, Vitara & XL-7
    Between Terminals No. 1 & 3 4000-6000
    Between Terminals No. 1 & 2 (Vitara & XL-7)
    At Idle 20
    At Wide Open Throttle 6000
Between Terminals No. 2 & 3 (Grand Vitara)
    At Idle 0
    At Wide Open Throttle 4600
  2. If scan tool is not available, go to next step. If scan tool is available, select DATA LIST mode, and observe THROT POS SENSOR parameter. TP SENSOR voltage parameter should be as specified. See THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE  table. If TP sensor parameter is not as specified, go to next step.
    THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE

    Application (1) Volts
    Aerio
    At Idle .35-.65
    At Wide Open Throttle 3.5-4.5
    Esteem (1.6L) (2)
    At Idle 0.2-1
    At Wide Open Throttle 2.8-4.8
    Esteem (1.8L) & Grand Vitara (2)
    At Idle .35-.65
    At Wide Open Throttle 3.5-4.5
    Vitara (1.6L & 2.0L) (2)
    At Idle .5-1.2
    At Wide Open Throttle 3.4-4.7
    XL-7 (2)
    At Idle .51-.91
    At Wide Open Throttle 3.7-4.4
    (1) Ignition on and engine off.
    (2) Measure voltage at ECM connector terminal No. C46-25 (Aerio), C20-6 (Esteem 1.6L), C20-25 (Esteem 1.8L), C51-3-9, (Vitara 1.6L & 2.0L), C51-3-12 (Grand Vitara), and C51-3-9 (XL-7). See PIN VOLTAGE/CIRCUIT RESISTANCE CHARTS article.
  3. To adjust TP sensor. Loosen Turn TP sensor screws. Turn TP sensor fully counterclockwise and then turn it clockwise slowly to locate point where DVOM voltage reading is as specified. Holding TP sensor at that position, tighten screws snug. Repeat step  1 . If readings cannot be obtained as specified, replace TP sensor.
  4. Turn ignition off. Reconnect TP sensor 3-pin harness connector. Loosen TP sensor mounting screws. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and ECM connector C20 terminal 25 (Esteem 1.8L) or ECM connector C51-3-12 (Grand Vitara). Turn TP sensor fully counterclockwise and then turn it clockwise slowly to locate point where DVOM voltage reading is as specified. See THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE  table. Holding TP sensor at that position, tighten screws snug. Repeat step  1 . If readings cannot be obtained as specified, replace TP sensor.
