Idle Speed
CAUTION:
DO NOT attempt to adjust throttle stop screw to adjust idle. Throttle stop screw is factory-set and is used as zero reference point for all other adjustments.
Idle speed is controlled by PCM using an IAC valve. To check idle speed, check following:
- Ensure all fuel and emission control system wire connectors and hoses are properly connected. Ensure accelerator cable has free-play, air cleaner and ducts are properly installed and air filter element is in good condition. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Ensure ignition timing is correct. See IGNITION TIMING
. Check for and repair any intake air leaks.
- Using scan tool, select DATA LIST mode and observe IDLE SPEED and IAC DUTY parameters. Compare idle speed with specifications in IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS
table.
- If idle speed or idle air control duty cycle is not within specification, check operation of Idle Air Control (IAC) system. See appropriate procedure under IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE SYSTEM CHECK
under IDLE SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
- Turn A/C on. Compare idle speed with specifications in IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS
table. If idle speed is not as specified, check A/C signal. See A/C SIGNALS CIRCUIT CHECK
under MISCELLANEOUS CONTROLS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
