Esteem (1.8L)

  1. If scan tool is not available, go to next step. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. On scan tool, select DATA LIST and observe THROT POS SENSOR parameter. When throttle is fully closed, parameter should read .35-.65 volts. When throttle is at wide open throttle, parameter should read 3.5-4.5 volts. Voltage parameter should vary from low to high with no drop-off as throttle is moved from closed to fully open. If parameter is as specified, testing is complete. If parameter is not as specified, go to step  3 .
  2. Access ECM. Turn ignition on. Backprobing at ECM, measure voltage between ground and ECM harness connector C20 terminal No. 25. See Figure and Fig 1 . When throttle is fully closed, voltage should read .35-.65 volts. When throttle is at wide open throttle, voltage should read 3.5-4.5 volts. Voltage reading should vary from low to high with no drop-off as throttle is moved from closed to fully open. If voltage is as specified, testing is complete. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Adjust installation angle of TP sensor. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR - AERIO, ESTEEM (1.8L), GRAND VITARA & XL-7 in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If TP sensor does not adjust as specified, replace TP sensor.
