Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC P0505 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0505 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See INTERMITTENTS TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool. Ensure all wires and hoses are connected, accelerator cable has some play in it, and ignition timing is within specification. Ensure all accessories are off. Ensure air filter is okay and no vacuum leaks are present. Ensure transmission is in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T) and parking brake is on. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, check idle speed and IAC duty cycle. See IDLE SPEED/IDLE AIR CONTROL (IAC) DUTY CYCLE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Go to next step.
    IDLE SPEED/IAC DUTY CYCLE SPECIFICATIONS

Idle Speed (RPM) IAC Duty Cycle (%)
    A/C Off
    625-725 10-50
    A/C On
    750-850 (1)
    (1) Information not available from manufacturer.
  3. If idle speed and IAC duty cycle are as specified, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See INTERMITTENTS TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If intermittent problem is not found, replace ECM (PCM) and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If idle speed and IAC duty cycle are not as specified, go to next step.
  4. Check IAC valve operation. See IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE under IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If IAC valve is okay, go to step  7 . If IAC valve is not okay, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM (PCM) 28-pin connector C51-2. Measure resistance between ECM (PCM) 28-pin harness connector C51-2 terminal No. 14 (Purple/Black wire) and terminals No. 15 (Light Green/Black wire), No. 24 (Purple/Yellow wire) and No. 25 (Gray/Blue wire), individually. Resistance should be 40-48 ohms at each terminal. If resistance readings are as specified, go to next step. If resistance readings are not as specified, check for open or short in Purple/Black wire, Light Green/Black wire, Purple/Yellow wire or Gray/Blue wire between IAC valve and ECM (PCM). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If wires are okay, replace IAC valve and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  6. Turn ignition off. Reconnect ECM (PCM) connector. Disconnect IAC valve connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminals No. 2 (Blue/Black wires) and No. 5 (Blue/Black wires), individually. If 10-14 volts exist on both wires, replace IAC valve and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If problem still persists, replace ECM (PCM) and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If 10-14 volts do not exist on either wire, check for short or open in appropriate Blue/Black wire between IAC valve and main relay. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  7. Check intake system for leaks and restrictions. Check fast idle control system. See IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If intake system and fast idle control system are okay, go to next step.
  8. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST for DTC P0500. See DTC P0500: VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) MALFUNCTION  . If DTC P0500 is set, test and repair as necessary. If DTC P0500 is not set, go to next step.
  9. Check engine mechanical condition. See appropriate article in ENGINES. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If engine mechanical condition is okay, go to next step.
  10. Check for excessive load (power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, generator and transmission) on engine. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no excessive load on engine is found, replace ECM (PCM) and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
