Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Check for DTC P0135. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0135 is not set, go to next step. If DTC P0135 is set, go to DTC P0135: HO2S BANK NO. 1 (LEFT BANK), SENSOR NO. 1 (B1 S1), HEATER CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION  .
  2. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC P0132 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0132 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See INTERMITTENTS TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Check fuel gauge. If fuel gauge indicates "E", add fuel and recheck. If fuel gauge does not indicate "E", go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition on. Observe HO2S Bank 1, Sensor 1 parameter on scan tool. If reading is one volt or less, go to next step. If reading is more than one volt, check for short to power in Red wire between HO2S Bank 1, Sensor 1 and ECM (PCM) 26-pin connector C51-3 terminals No. 4. If wire is okay, replace ECM (PCM) and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  5. Backprobing, measure voltage between ECM (PCM) 26-pin connector C51-3 terminals No. 4 (Red wire) and No. 21 (Gray/Yellow wire). See Figure . Start engine. Observe voltage while revving engine several times. If readings varies between zero volt and one volt, go to next step. If readings do not varies between zero volt and one volt, go to step  7 .
  6. Disconnect ECM (PCM) 26-pin connector C51-3. Check for poor terminal contact at ECM (PCM) 26-pin connector C51-3. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If terminal contact is okay, replace ECM (PCM) and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  7. Check for short or open in Red wire between HO2S Bank 1, Sensor 1 and ECM (PCM) 26-pin connector C51-3 terminals No. 4. Also check for short or open in Gray/Yellow wire between HO2S Bank 1, Sensor 1 and ECM (PCM) 26-pin connector C51-3 terminals No. 21. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If wires are okay, go to next step.
  8. Check fuel injector circuit operation. See B-1: FUEL INJECTOR CIRCUIT INSPECTION in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If fuel injector circuit is okay, go to next step.
  9. Check fuel injector resistance on cylinders No. 1, 3 and 5. See INJECTOR RESISTANCE in SERVICE & ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS article. Replace injector(s) as necessary. If fuel injector resistance is okay, go to next step.
  10. Perform fuel pressure test. See FUEL SYSTEM in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If fuel pressure is okay, replace HO2S Bank 1, Sensor 1 and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC P0132 is set, replace ECM (PCM) and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
