Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, go to A4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any DTC other than DTC P0506 of P0507 is set, perform testing for that DTC first. If no other DTC is set, go to next step.
  3. Check engine idle speed and IAC duty cycle. See IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If idle speed is as specified, problem is probably intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If idle speed is not as specified, go to next step.
  4. If idle speed is to low, go to next step. If idle speed is to high, go to step  7 .
  5. Check IAC system. Perform DIAGNOSIS & REPAIR PROCEDURE  under DTC P0505: IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION. If IAC system tests okay, go to next step. If IAC system does not test okay, repair or replace IAC system components as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  6. If IAC valve off duty cycle was more than about 30 percent and less than 70 percent (40 or 60 percent at high altitudes) when tested in step  3 , check for plugged air passage or an excessive engine load. If IAC valve off duty cycle was not as specified, substitute a known good ECM, and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC does not reset, testing is complete.
  8. If IAC valve off duty cycle was less than 3 or more than 97 percent when tested in step  3 , check for vacuum leaks, improperly operating PCV valve or EVAP canister purge control system. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If IAC valve off duty cycle was not as specified, substitute a known good ECM, and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC does not reset, testing is complete.
