Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, go to A4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe throttle valve opening percentage parameter. If parameter reads 2 percent or less, go to next step. If parameter reads more than 2 percent, problem is probably intermittent. System is okay at this time. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP sensor 3-pin harness connector. Check for poor terminal contact at TP sensor connector. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and TP sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Pink wire) and No. 3 (Gray wire), individually. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Voltage should be 4-6 volts at each wire. If voltage is as specified, go to step  7 . If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 16-pin harness connector C20. ECM is located under instrument panel, behind glove box. See Figure . Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in ECM harness connector C20. See Figure . If problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problem is found, substitute a known good ECM, and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  6. Check for open or short to ground in Pink wire between TP sensor connector and ECM. Check Pink wire and Green/Red wire for short to each other. Check Gray wire for short to ground between TP sensor and ECM. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  7. Measure resistance between specified TP sensor terminals. See CHECKING THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR RESISTANCE  table. See Figure . If resistance is not as specified, replace TP sensor. If resistance is as specified, substitute a known good ECM, and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
    CHECKING THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR RESISTANCE

    Measure Between Terminals Specification (Ohms)
    No. 1 & 2 2,500-6,000
    No. 1 & 3 (1) 100-20,000
    (1) Should vary with throttle position.
