Diagnostic Work Flow
- Customer Complaint Analysis
Record details of problem and how it occurred as described by the customer. Using a questionnaire simplifies collection of all information necessary for proper analysis and diagnosis of ABS problem. See Fig 1
. Go to next step.
- Symptom Confirmation
Verify customer complaint by checking vehicle and letting customer know if symptom is identified as a failure. Ensure ABS warning light circuit is operating properly. See TEST A: ABS WARNING LIGHT INOPERATIVE
, TEST B: ABS WARNING LIGHT STAYS ON
and TEST C: ABS WARNING LIGHT FLASHES CONSTANTLY
under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Go to next step.
- Retrieve, Record & Erase Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
. Record any DTCs displayed. Clear diagnostic trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
. Turn ignition on and again retrieve DTCs. If any recorded DTC resets, go to step 5
. If any recorded DTC does not reset, check brake system and repair as required. After confirming brake system operation, again retrieve DTCs. If recorded DTC resets, go to step 5
. If recorded DTC does not reset, go to next step.
- Road Test
Test drive vehicle at 25 MPH for more than one minute and note any ABS problems or abnormal lighting of ABS warning light. If ABS problem is present, go to next step. If ABS problem is not present, go to step 6
.
- DTC Testing
Perform corresponding DTC diagnostic test procedure. See ABS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX
table. Repair or replace any faulty parts as described in DTC test. After repair, go to step 7
.
- Intermittent Faults
If fault is not found, inspect probable sources for intermittent faults (e.g. wiring harness connectors, wheel sensors, etc.). After checking all connectors and wiring harnesses, go to next step.
- Final Confirmation
After repair has been performed, clear DTC. Perform vehicle test drive. Clear and recheck for DTCs. If normal code (DTC 12 on ABS warning light or NO CODES on scan tool) is retrieved, fault has been properly repaired. If a malfunction code resets, repeat procedure.
