Diagnostic Procedure

  1. If Air Bag Diagnostic System Check has been performed, go to next step. If air bag diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
  2. Before continuing with diagnosis, ensure scan tool is operating properly and correct cartridge is installed. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure scan tool is connected properly to Data Link Connector (DLC). If connection is okay, go to next step. If connection is not okay, repair as necessary and go to step  9.
  3. Attempt to establish communication with other control modules using scan tool. If communication is not okay, go to next step. If communication is okay, go to step  6.
  4. Disconnect driver-side and passenger-side air bag connectors ("Q02" and "Q05") behind steering wheel side cap and behind glove box. See Figure & Figure . Disconnect SDM connector "Q06". See Figure. Measure resistance between DLC connector "G13" terminal No. 9 and SDM connector "Q06" terminal No. 12. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is less than infinite, replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  9.
  5. Disconnect connector "G14". See Figure. Measure resistance between SDM connector "Q06" terminal No. 12 and connector "Q03" terminal No. 5. If resistance is less than infinite, repair open in Yellow/Black wire between DLC connector "G13" terminal No. 8 and connector "G14" terminal No. 5. If resistance is infinite, an open or high resistance condition exists in Yellow/Black wire between SDM connector "Q06" terminal No. 12 and connector "Q03" terminal No. 5. Replace wiring harness. Go to step  9.
  6. Disconnect 20-pin connector "G16" located between instrument cluster and floor harness. See Figure. Recheck communication with SDM. If communication is not okay, go to next step. If communication is okay, a malfunction exists in Yellow/Black wire between connector "G16" and other control modules. Repair as necessary. Go to step  9.
  7. Disconnect connector "Q03". See Figure. Disconnect driver-side and passenger-side air bag connectors ("Q02" and "Q05"), located behind steering wheel side cap and behind glove box. See Figure & Figure . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage at connector "Q06" terminal No. 12. If voltage is more than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is one volt or less, a short to ground exists in Yellow/Black wire between connectors "Q03" and "Q06". Replace wiring harness. Go to step  9.
  8. If voltage measured in previous step is 6 volts or more, a short to voltage exists in Yellow/Black wire. Replace wiring harness. Go to next step. If voltage measured in previous step is less than 6 volts, a malfunction in Yellow/Black wire exists in instrument panel harness. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
  9. Reconnect all air bag system components. Clear all air bag system DTC's. Go to AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
