Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, go to A4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. If not using scan tool, go to next step. Using scan tool, turn ignition on and shift through all gear positions while observing PNP SIGNAL on scan tool. If "D" range is not present in all gear positions except Park and Neutral, go to step  4 . If "D" range is present in all gear positions except Park and Neutral, problem is probably intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Backprobbing at ECM, measure voltage between ground and ECM harness connector E92 terminal No. 14 (Gray/Red wire). See Figure . Turn ignition on and shift through all gear positions while observing voltmeter. With transmission in Park or Neutral voltage reading should be 10-14 volts, when transmission in all other gears voltage should be 0-2.5 volts. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, problem is probably intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  4. If not using scan tool, go to next step. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, shift through all gear positions while observing PNP SIGNAL on scan tool. If P/N range is present in only Park and Neutral gear position, go to step  6 . If P/N range is present in any gear position besides Park and Neutral. Check transmission range sensor and circuits operation. See TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  5. Backprobbing at ECM, measure voltage between ground and ECM harness connector E92 terminal No. 14 (Gray/Red wire). See Figure . Turn ignition on and shift through all gear positions while observing voltmeter. If 10-14 volts is present in only Park and Neutral gear position, go to next step. If 10-14 volts is present in any gear position besides Park and Neutral.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TCM 20-pin harness connector. TCM is located under dash, and is attached to bracket near steering column. Check for good terminal connection at TCM. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problem is found, turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and TCM 20-pin harness connector E25 terminal No. 28 (Gray/Red wire). If 10-14 volts are present, go to next step. If 10-14 volts are not present, go to step  8 .
  7. Check transmission shift cable adjustment. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS article. If transmission shift cable is okay, check transmission range sensor adjustment and check transmission range sensor operation. See TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under ENGINE SENORS & SWITCHES in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If no problem is found, replace TCM. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 35-pin harness connector E92. ECM is located under instrument panel, behind glove box. See Figure . Check for poor terminal contact at ECM harness connector E92. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  9. Check for and repair open in Gray/Red wire between TCM and ECM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If no problem is found, substitute a known good ECM, and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC does not reset, testing is complete.
