Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, go to A4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAC valve 2-pin harness connector. IAC valve is located in throttle body. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Black wire). If voltage reading is 10-14 volts, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step. If voltage reading is not 10-14 volts, check for open or short to ground in Red/Black wire between IAC valve, main relay and ECM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 28-pin harness connector C20. ECM is located under instrument panel, behind glove box. See Figure . Check continuity in Red wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector C20 terminal No. 28. See Figure . If continuity exist, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Red wire. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  4. Check continuity in Red wire between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal No. 1. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Red wire. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If continuity exist, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and ECM harness connector C20 terminal No. 28 (Red wire). Voltage reading should be Zero volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair short to power in Red wire. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  6. Test IAC valve operation. See IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE under IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If problem is found, replace IAC valve. If no problem is found, problem is probably intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If intermittent problem is not found, substitute a known good ECM and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC does not reset, testing is complete.
