Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, go to A4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition on. Turn A/C off. Backprobing at ECM, measure voltage between ground and ECM 22-pin harness connector E92 terminal No. 19 (Light Green/Black wire). See Figure . Voltage reading should be 10-14 volts when A/C switch is turned off. If voltage reading is as specified, leave ignition on and go to next step. If voltage reading is not as specified, check for short to ground in Light Green/Black wire between ECM and A/C amplifier. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  3. Backprobing at ECM, measure voltage between ground and ECM 16-pin harness connector C20 terminal No. 8 (Yellow wire). Voltage reading should be 10-14 volts when A/C switch is turned off. If voltage reading is as specified, problem is probably intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If voltage reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Remove A/C cooling fan relay. Relay is located in engine compartment fuse/relay block, located on left side of engine compartment. See Figure . Check A/C fan relay socket cavities and relay terminals for clean tight connections. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  5. Using DVOM, measure resistance between A/C cooling fan relay terminals No. 3 and 4. See Figure . Resistance should be 70-110 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace A/C cooling fan relay. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  6. Check for open or short in circuits between A/C cooling fan relay and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Also, check for open or short in Yellow wire between A/C cooling fan relay and ECM harness connector C20 terminal No. 8. SeeFigure . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  7. Substitute a known good ECM, and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC does not reset, testing is complete.
