Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, go to A4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Check fuel filler cap for proper installation, and gasket for deterioration. If problem is found, replace fuel filler cap. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  3. Check vacuum hoses for proper connection, leakage, plugging, and deterioration. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  4. Check EVAP canister vent valve and circuit. See FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP canister vent valve is not okay, go to next step. If EVAP canister vent valve is okay, go to step  10 .
  5. Check fuel level sensor and circuit. See DTC P0461: FUEL LEVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT - PERFORMANCE PROBLEM  . If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  6. Check EVAP canister for damage. See EVAP CANISTER under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If problem is found, replace EVAP canister. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  7. Check fuel tank, purge line and EVAP system components for leakage. For vacuum hose locations, see VACUUM DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  8. Check FTP sensor operation. See DTC P0451: EVAP SYSTEM PRESSURE SENSOR - RANGE/PERFORMANCE  . If problem is found, replace FTP sensor. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If FTP sensor is okay, go to next step.
  9. Check tank pressure control valve operation. See appropriate procedure under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If no problem is found, problem is probably intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If problem is found, replace tank pressure control valve. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  10. Check EVAP canister vent valve operation. See appropriate procedure under FUEL EVAPORATION in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If problem is found, replace EVAP canister vent valve. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  11. Check for short or open in Yellow/Black wire between EVAP canister vent valve harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector C21 terminals No. 3. See Figure and WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  12. Substitute a known good ECM, and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC does not reset, testing is complete.
