Esteem (1.8L)
- Perform engine system check. See A4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK
under SYSTEMS TESTS in SELF DIAGNOSTICS - ESTEEM 1.8L article.
- Check spark plugs for proper application, electrode wear, carbon deposits or insulator damage. If problem is found, replace as necessary. If spark plugs are okay, check spark. See SPARK TEST under IGNITION TESTS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If spark plugs and spark are okay, go to step 8. If spark plugs and spark do not test okay, go to next step.
- If any DTCs were retrieved during engine system check, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS
in SELF DIAGNOSTICS SELF DIAGNOSTICS - ESTEEM 1.8L article. If no DTCs were retrieved, go to next step.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to ignition coil connectors. Also, check high tension cables. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check for open or short in ignition coil power and ground circuits. See Fig 1. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary.
- Substitute a known-good ignition coil assembly. Repeat step 2. If test result is okay, replace ignition coil assembly. If test result is not okay, go to next step.
- Check Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor circuits. See DTC P0340: CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION
under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF DIAGNOSTICS - ESTEEM 1.8L article. If CMP sensor tests okay, substitute ECM with known good unit and repeat step 2. If CMP sensor does not test okay, replace or repair CMP sensor or CMP sensor circuits as necessary.
- Check ignition timing and timing advance. See IGNITION TIMING
in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If timing and timing advance test okay, testing is complete. If timing and advance are not as specified, check timing belt installation, CKP sensor input signals related to ignition system. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary.
