Cranking System Symptom Diagnosis

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2004 Suzuki XL-7, 2004 Suzuki Vitara, 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara, 2003 Suzuki XL-7, and 2003 Suzuki Vitara. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For cranking system symptom diagnosis charts, see Fig 1 and Fig 2 .

Possible symptoms due to starting system trouble would be: starting motor does not run (or runs slowly), starting motor runs but fails to crank engine, and abnormal noise is heard. Proper diagnosis must be made to determine if the cause of each trouble lies in the battery, wiring harness, (including starting motor switch), starting motor or engine. Check following items and narrow down scope of possible causes. Check tightness of battery terminals (including ground cable connection on engine side) and starting motor terminals, discharge of battery, and mounting of starting motor.
