Ignition Switch & Column Lock: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Ensure front wheels are in a straight-ahead position. Disable air bag restraint system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  2. Remove driver-side air bag inflator module bolts from each side of steering column. Release Yellow air bag module connector lock. Disconnect Yellow wiring harness connector and remove air bag module.
  3. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL . Remove steering column upper and lower covers.
  4. Turn ignition switch to ACC or ON position. Remove steering column shift interlock cable assembly from steering column (if equipped).
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove steering column. See STEERING COLUMN . Using suitable stud remover, remove shear bolts from steering column lock assembly. See Fig 1. DO NOT damage aluminum part of steering lock/ignition switch body.
WARNING: DO NOT allow steering column or contact coil to rotate while steering lock is removed from steering column.
