Planetary Gears & Output Shaft: Installation

NOTE: Clutch discs should be soaked in ATF for 15 minutes prior to installation. Lubricate all parts with ATF. Coat thrust bearings and races with Transjel(R) Transmission Assembly Lubricant or petroleum jelly.
NOTE: Place transmission in upright position and secure in place.
NOTE: For special tool part numbers, refer to special tools list. See SPECIAL TOOLS  .
  1. Install the output shaft thrust bearing and race to the transmission case. See Fig 1 .
  2. Install the brake applying tube and leaf spring to the transmission case. Align the tube lug with the cutout in the case. See Figure .
  3. Install the planetary gear/output shaft together to the transmission case. See Fig 2 . Install the reverse brake plates and discs in the following order:
    1. The plate.
    2. The disc.
    3. The plate.
    4. The disc.
    5. The plate.
    6. The disc.
    7. The plate.
    8. The disc.
  4. Measure the reverse brake plate-to-transmission case lug clearance. See Fig 3 :
    1. Take the measurement: Reverse brake plate-to-transmission case lug clearance should be to specification. See TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS  .
    2. If clearance is less than the specification, perform the following steps:
      • Inspect for proper installation.
      • Inspect for dust or fluid on the reverse brake disc.
    3. If clearance is more than the specification, replace one of the following components:
      • The reverse brake disc.
      • The reverse brake plate.
      • The reverse backing plate.
  5. Install the reverse brake reaction plate to the transmission case. Align the notch in the reverse brake reaction plate with the leaf spring. See Fig 4 .
  6. Install the snap ring to the front of the reverse brake reaction plate. See Figure .
