Planetary Gears & Output Shaft: Reassembly

NOTE: Clutch discs should be soaked in ATF for 15 minutes prior to installation. Lubricate all parts with ATF. Coat thrust bearings and races with Transjel(R) Transmission Assembly Lubricant or petroleum jelly.
NOTE: For special tool part numbers, refer to special tools list. See SPECIAL TOOLS  .
  1. Install the thrust bearing assembly to the rear planetary ring gear. Install the inner shaft to the rear planetary ring gear.
  2. Install the inner shaft snap ring. Install the following rear planetary ring gear components:
    • The rear planetary sun gear with wide machined surface downward. See Fig 1 .
    • The rear planetary gear.
    • The rear planetary thrust washer and sleeve oil seal ring.
  3. Install the rear planetary thrust bearing and race. Compress the snap ring while installing the front planetary ring gear.
  4. Install the following one-way clutch components to the front planetary gear:
    • The one-way clutch rear thrust washer.
    • The one-way clutch.
    • The snap ring.
    Install the reverse brake reaction plate to the front planetary gear. See Fig 2 .
  5. Inspect the front planetary gear operation:
    1. Hold the reverse brake reaction plate stationary. See Fig 3 .
    2. Inspect that the gear locks when turned in the clockwise direction.
    3. Inspect that the gear turns freely in the counter clockwise direction.
    4. If the gear does not operate properly, disassemble and inspect.
  6. Install the front planetary gear with the beveled side down. Install the rear planetary thrust washer to the front planetary gear. Install the front planetary gear to the output shaft.
