Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If DTC P0118 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0118 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition on. Select ECT sensor parameter on scan tool. If scan tool displays -40°F (-40°C), go to next step. If scan tool does not display -40°F (-40°C), problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Check for poor terminal contact at ECT sensor connector. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If terminal contact is okay, measure voltage between ground and ECT sensor harness connector Orange/Black wire terminal. If reading is 4-6 volts, go to step  5. If reading is not 4-6 volts, go to next step.
  4. Check for open or short in Orange/Black wire between ECT sensor and 26-pin connector C51-3 terminal No. 2. If wire is okay disconnect PCM 26-pin connector C51-3. Check for poor terminal contact at PCM 26-pin connector C51-3. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If terminal contact is okay, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  5. Turn ignition off. Connect a fused jumper wire between ECT sensor harness connector Orange/Black wire and Blue/White wire terminals. If scan tool displays 327°F (164°C), replace ECT sensor. If scan tool does not display 327°F (164°C), check for open in Blue/White wire between ECT sensor and 26-pin connector C51-3 terminal No. 23. If wire is okay, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect PCM 26-pin connector C51-3. Check for poor terminal contact at PCM 26-pin connector C51-3. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If terminal contact is okay, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
