Disassembly & Inspection
- Place the feeler gage between the brake flange and the snap ring in order to measure the clearance. See Fig 1
. Measure brake flange-to-snap ring clearance. See TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS
. Replace the clutch disc or plate if the readings are not as specified.
- Remove the following components from the overdrive case:
- The brake flange snap ring. See Fig 1
.
- The brake flange.
- The clutch discs.
- The clutch plates.
- The cushion brake plate.
- The planetary ring gear.
- The thrust bearing races.
- The thrust bearing.
- Remove the following clutch piston return spring components using a Flathead screwdriver:
- The snap ring. See Fig 2
.
- The retainer.
- The springs.
- Apply low compressed air into the Overdrive (OD) case fluid hole in order to remove the brake piston. See Fig 3
. Remove the brake piston "O" Rings.
- Remove the following components from the rear of the OD case:
- The 2 sealing rings. See Fig 4
.
- The bearing.
- The bearing race.
- Measure clutch piston return springs free length using a vernier caliper. See TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS
. Replace the springs which are not within specifications.
